When many people think about ADHD, they often picture a child who is constantly hyperactive, disruptive in class, or unable to sit still. But ADHD in girls often looks very different and because of that, many girls go unnoticed for years.
Girls are more likely to internalize their struggles rather than show them outwardly. Instead of appearing disruptive, they may seem quiet, emotional, perfectionistic, forgetful, or overwhelmed. Many become skilled at masking their difficulties in order to meet expectations at school, with friends, or at home.
At Loblolly Wellness Collective, we often see girls who appear “high functioning” on the outside while internally struggling with attention regulation, emotional overwhelm, anxiety, and exhaustion.
Some commonly missed signs of ADHD in girls can include:
- Frequent daydreaming or zoning out
- Difficulty staying organized
- Emotional sensitivity or rejection sensitivity
- Perfectionism
- Trouble starting tasks
- Forgetfulness
- Anxiety around school or deadlines
- Feeling overwhelmed easily
- Difficulty maintaining friendships
- Emotional shutdowns after school
Many girls with ADHD work incredibly hard to compensate for these challenges. They may spend extra time on homework, constantly worry about forgetting things, or feel emotionally exhausted from trying to “keep it together” throughout the day.
Because these struggles are less outwardly visible, ADHD is often mistaken for anxiety, stress, personality traits, or simply being “too emotional.”
Another important thing to understand is that ADHD is not a character flaw. Children with ADHD are often creative, empathetic, imaginative, curious, and deeply thoughtful. However, when their struggles are misunderstood, they may begin to believe negative things about themselves like:
- “I’m lazy.”
- “I’m not trying hard enough.”
- “Why is this easier for everyone else?”
- “Something must be wrong with me.”
Early support can help children better understand how their brains work while also building confidence, emotional regulation skills, and healthier coping strategies.
If your child consistently struggles with focus, overwhelm, emotional regulation, anxiety, or organization, it may be helpful to explore additional support or assessment services.
At Loblolly Wellness Collective, we provide strengths based and compassionate support for neurodivergent children, teens, and adults in a holistic and trauma informed environment. We believe children deserve spaces where they feel understood, supported, and empowered to thrive as themselves.
